Mick Jenkins - "Jazz"

New Tracksadmin1 Comment

Husky-voiced Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins drops a moving and metaphorical video for his upcoming project titled The Water[s]. It's officially out August 12th.

"Jazz" features a beautiful, minimal beat that's guided by what I think are some gleaming vibraphone melodies. I love the way the chorus swells, and Mick's hook is laid back, but monstrous! Like usual, his bars are thoughtful and interesting.

I can't wait for the 12th!

Mick Jenkins - "Who Else" (prod. TJ Osinulu)

https://soundcloud.com/mickjenkinsmusic/mick-jenkins-who-else-prod-tj-osinulu Mick Jenkins has really been impressing lately, namely with his last video for the macabre "Martyrs," and now with his new single "Who Else." The man is proving to be a hell of a wordsmith ("Piers Morgan my peers now"!) and his lyrics retain a compelling, socially-conscious edge. But what steals the show here for me is the hard-hitting, somewhat leftfield instrumental, courtesy of one TJ Osinulu. This is the only beat I've heard (and was able to find) of his, but his production is a striking balance of forceful and jittery; there is also a neat, spacey cool-down in the middle of the track.

"Who Else" has left us further interested in Jenkin's forthcoming mixtape, The Water[s], which arrives June 24 and is apparently a prequel to last year's Trees and Truths. If his past few tunes or videos have caught your ear, do check out that tape.

Mick Jenkins - "Leonidas"

Mick Jenkins rides a chiming instrumental on new single "Leonidas," the third glimpse we've been given of his latest full-length effort The Water[s], due out in February. With this new track, as well as that macabre music video for "Martyrs" covered last week, this is a project to keep your eyes peeled for. Check it!

Mick Jenkins - "Crossroads" ft. Chance the Rapper & Vic Mensa

Mick Jenkins releases this song with fellow Chicago rappers Chance the Rapper and Vic Mensa. If you needed more evidence that Chicago is the scene of more than just drill, but thoughtful rap with with elastic flows, here it is. Over an orchestral sample and metronomic hi-hats, Mick breaks out his singing voice, Chance gets even weirder than usual, and Vic shows that he deserves all of the blog attention he's been getting. Expect more from these three talented young men.
