Karen O - "Rapt"

New TracksjeremyComment

Yeah Yeah Yeahs front woman Karen O recently announced her first solo album, Crush Songs, and everyone was wondering what it would sound like. Would it just be another YYYs album? Well, here comes the first taste, a song called "Rapt," and for those who have been paying attention to O's career, it isn't much of a shock. While it sounds a little like a lo-fi track that wouldn't have felt out of place on PJ Harvey's Uh Huh Her, it is also very much a Karen O song.

The song actually originates from her brief stint under the moniker Native Korean Rock from a few years back. It centers on a patient, simple acoustic strum, and a very direct vocal. "Do I really need / Another habit like you?" O sings in the chorus, deciding that yes she thinks she might. The song clocks in under two minutes, which is enough. Yeah Yeah Yeahs have done acoustic renditions of their songs before, and they sound a bit like this. The minimalistic video, directed by her husband and production designed by K.K. Barrett (Oscar-nominated for Her), depicts O floating around underwater in a bright red dress, her blonde shock of hair gone brown again. None of this is too complicated, which is why it works. O has always sounded quite comfortable in a more intimate setting, and this little ditty has me looking forward to the album.

Crush Songs is out September 9 via Cult.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Sacrilege"

The new Yeah Yeah Yeahs video is an awesomely emotional experience, filled with dirty secrets, hypocrisy, and murder. Kudos to Megaforce for the direction on this thing, and look out for the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album, Mosquito, which is dropping in the middle of April. Enjoy!

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs drop a sharp, new single with the track "Sacrilege." Not only does the track feel like some kind of Rolling Stones-inspired arena rock anthem that closes up shop with a gospel chorus, but Karen O gives an awesomely energetic performance on the chorus, too.

The band's next album, Mosquito, is dropping in April.

Stream the New Swans Album

Stream: Swans- The Seer Slowly but surely, the practically unclassifiable art rock titans Swans have unleashed tracks from their new album The Seer. Last month, they dropped an edited version of "The Apostate," which appears on The Seer in its complete, 23-minute duration, and last week they released another gargantuan track, the 12-minute "Mother Of The World," via NPR. As of today, the new album is officially available to stream, again thanks to NPR, in its entire 2-hour glory. Listening to this album is no small feat, but as somebody who has had difficulty getting into Swans in the past, I can attest that The Seer is surprisingly inviting for such a leviathan of a record. Frontman Michael Gira--a man whose boundless ability to reinvent himself and stay relevant makes people half his age look bad--remains in a creative class of his own on this record, although he does get some help. Guest contributors include Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, on "Song For the Warrior," and Low's Mimi Parker and Alan Sparhawk on the stunning opening track "Lunacy," perhaps my favorite track from the album.

The Seer will be streaming on NPR until its August 28th release date. Pre-order it now from Young God Records.
