Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois - "Mag11 P82"

New Trackstheneedledrop1 Comment

Venetian Snares and Daniel Lanois recently announced a self-titled collaborative album and shared its opening track. The former a breakcore alchemist/provocateur, the latter a veteran producer notable for his work with Brian Eno, U2, and Neil Young; what the two lack in apparent musical common ground, they more than make up for with their shared Canadianness. But in all seriousness, this lead single suggests it's actually a match made in heaven. Daniel's pedal steel-sourced ambience is a lovely complement to VS's frenetic drum programming. And the cover art is my aesthetic – perhaps that's less relevant, but the visual side of things should get some love in these kinds of write-ups more often.

Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois drops May 4 via Planet Mu.

Zomby - "Overdose"

New Tracksadmin3 Comments

This week, London electronic music producer Zomby is dropping his latest full-length album, With Love. It'll be on 4AD, and features over thirty tracks that span two discs. As the track "Overdose" shows, this guy is really working to diversity his sound, trying his hand at some very atomspheric, textured, and boom-y breakbeat electronica. Enjoy!

Igorrr - Hallelujah

Admittedly, if I had casually heard the phrase "operatic breakcore" getting tossed around in a music conversation, I'd truly be fighting the urge to step in and shout, "GIMMICK! GIMMICK! GIMMICK!" However, that's really the only word grouping I can conjure to describe the sounds on Igorrr's Hallelujah. I guess it isn't truly functional, though, because there's an indescribable metal influence on some of these tracks, too.

Grab this album on vinyl, CD, or MP3 on Bandcamp.

While I'm not completely convinced that the music streaming in the above widget isn't a gimmick, at least it's detailed and impressively produced. The pairing of genres here may, on paper, look about as appetizing as a mustard and jelly sandwich, there's some serious gourmet cooking going on here.

Gore Tech and Rotator- "Heretic"

Some heavy bass and hard breaks from this new Gore Tech and Rotator single for the track "Heretic," which is just too heavy and crushing to deny. It's a destructive combination of dubstep, digital hardcore, and breakcore that's been aptly uploaded to a Bandcamp that has the phrase "warstep" written into its description. Enjoy!
