The new Cass McCombs album, though I did find it to be a little middle-of-the-road, is a nice change of pace for this singer-songwriter. A good handful of the songs here have a harder rock edge to 'em, and some pretty interesting stories laced into the lyrics.

It'll be released via Domino Recs this November, and the first track to drop from it, "the Same Thing," features a much more driving, straightforward execution than much of the material on April's Wit's End. Every time Cass McCombs drops an album, I feel myself swinging back and forth violently on a spectrum of enjoyment. The songs that win me over do so with little to no effort, and the songs I hate gather an immediate response from me as well.
Thankfully, "County Line" is a positive moment on the album for me, and maybe one of the best Cass has penned thus far. Not only is this song instantly catchy, but it has a soft, subtle tension that's difficult to find since volume reigns supreme these days.
