Half Japanese - "In Its Pull"

New TrackstheneedledropComment

https://soundcloud.com/joyful-noise-recordings/half-japanese-in-its-pull So much hype surrounding Half Japanese's upcoming record Overjoyed - it's their first full-length thing in 13 freaking years! It's not so hard to see why all the excitement: the band's DIY sound was groundbreaking throughout the 70s, 80s, and 90s and was influential to countless notable alt/indie rock artists, including Kurt Cobain and Daniel Johnston.

Now it's 2014, and with lo-fi music so readily accessible with the web, I can't really imagine this new single "In Its Pull" being mind-blowing for most listeners. That being said, Jad Fair still knows how to write the hell out of a song, so this is a pretty killer track all the same. It sounds in-the-moment like the group's best work and I dig the raw production Deerhoof's John Dieterich brings to the table. Thankfully, it looks as though Overjoyed will be a plenty enjoyable comeback that will be just offbeat enough. We know too well that sometimes even that is too much to ask for...

Overjoyed is due out September 2 via Joyful Noise Recordings.

Thee Source of Fawnation- 3EP

New TracksadminComment

After the release of its debut album, I Missed You Black Diamond, experimental music project Thee Source ov Fawnation is following things up with a new, 21-minute EP of dissonant drones, gritty beats, and ominous tones.

This "3EP" seems to work as a trilogy, with one track segueing into another to keep the 21 minutes of this release uninterrupted. Stream the 3EP above, and listen to more of this group's music right here.

PEPEPIANO- "NO WAY" ‡ STREAM

Between Baths, Teengirl Fantasy and the "Chillwave" movement, bedroom beat music has been getting a lot of positive press. It's not the most amazing music to walk the planet, but a lot of these solo and duo projects tend to have an eccentric edge, which makes them stand out for me. Maybe it's the isolation that comes with working in small numbers, and not having to sacrifice an artistic vision for the sake of another band member--don't mind me stipulating, though.

PEPEPIANO is certainly cut from this same cloth. "NO WAY," is the project's latest single, and features a slow tempo and dreamy, fuzzy sound quality. I was about to cast it off are messy until the track restrains itself at 1:53 with some haunting chords. Give a listen and let me know what you think:
