Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment - "Sunday Candy"

New TracksadminComment

OK, OK, OK. Take a listen to this track. Recognize anybody? Yes, that's Chicago rapper-singer Chance The Rapper's voice there. While he doesn't get top billing on this track, he is very much a part of a four-person musical act called The Social Experiment. There's been rumor for a little while that Chance was going to be releasing a project titled Surf soon, and this seems to be what he was talking about.

The Social Experiment's remaining members include the likes of Peter Cottontale, Nate Fox, and, of course, Donnie Trumpet. Mr. Trumpet is also known as Nico Segal, and used to play in Kids These Days with one of Chance's close friends Vic Mensa.

Now, together under this Social Experiment umbrella, Segal and company have released this stellar new single. It's a spectacular blend of pop, hip hop, gospel, and soul. It features some a wonderfully beautiful vocal melodies, bright horns, and an endearing piano as well.

Really excited to hear how this experiment pans out!

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - I'm In Your Mind Fuzz

New TracksContributor JonesComment

Australia really seems to be producing some of the world’s top modern psychedelic rock bands these days, and in the spotlight this week is I’m In Your Mind Fuzz by King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, which may be one of the year’s most foot-tapping, head-nodding psychedelic rock albums - especially when compared to Oddments, the group's previous effort released earlier this year, which wasn’t anywhere near as catchy. With fast paced singles like “Cellophane” and the band's distinct sound comprised of wavy off-kilter vocals and synth leads, propulsive old-school drumming, myriad harmonica solos, and a bit of sitar, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard might not be making groundbreaking music exactly, but they've certainly delivered one of the grooviest weirdo albums of the year.

The Derevolutions - "Now You Know My Name"

A bit of fun from the Derevolutions on this video for "Now You Know My Name." Kudos to Tristan Jalleh for the fun, colorful, domino-centric animation attached to the song.

The Derevolutions are a Boston-based indie pop project whose tracks are loaded with danceable beats, sunny guitars, and unabashedly sweet melodies. Oh, there's an occasional rap verse as well.

It's not a bad listen--especially if you're trying to squeeze the last bit of warmth out of 2014 before fall is in full swing.

The Frights - Self-Titled

New Trackstheneedledrop4 Comments

San Diego surf-punk trio The Frights put out their self-titled debut LP this past Halloween, a fitting release date given that the band describes itself as the “house band for a 1950’s underwater Halloween party.” With its delightfully messy, reverb-drenched recording and “dirty” take on doo wop, The Frights is simply a rip-roaring good time through and through. Have a listen above and enjoy!

The Keepsies- Dumb Fun

The Keepsies are a New York trio, and among the musicians involved is Jason Kelly of Fergus & Geronimo. If you've heard that duo's work--especially their 2010 album "unlearn.", the somewhat vintage rock aesthetic the Keepsies projects shouldn't be too much of a surprise.

The heavy level of snark usually associated with Fergus & Geronimo's music is surprisingly vacant here, which is nice because the band has certainly replaced that with smitten sincerity on tracks like "Saturday" and "Get Back."
