Phosphorescent - "Song For Zula"

VideosGuest User2 Comments

A really touching and heartbreaking song from Phosphorescent, combined with an impactful video.

I really dig the vocals here from Matthew Houck, he has the singing voice that is perfect for telling a story. It sounds worn, in a way that makes you believe in what he is singing about. On top of that the song has a really nice synthesizer hum to it that builds with these orchestral strings, very tight production.

The video works with the lyrics of the song a slow build of a woman beat down desperately trying to free herself of the bonds that hold her. Of course there are tons of metaphors here, and the video is very well shot up to the very end with the new found freedom of the girl.

No Spill Blood- "Good Company"

Irish Super group No Spill Blood consists of members from Elk, Adebisi Shank and Magic Pockets. This new single from the the project premiered by BBC consists of muddy, heavy, and repetitive riffs as well as some very distorted vocals. They combine this with some really fantastic spacey synthesizers that gives the entire production a pretty original feel. Everything is combined into what feels like a beautiful mess of raw power and aggression. I definitley want to hear more from them and their particular brand of noise rock.

Look for their EP set to drop sometime this summer.

Pinkish Black- Self Titled LP

Pinkish Black is a new wave duo heavily influenced by the world of doom metal. Using these two styles they manage to create a pretty unique atmosphere with their music. The name of the project itself seems to accurately describe the type of music on display here. The main feeling is of total all encompassing darkness in a old horror movie sense. This is thanks to the incredibly haunting vocals and slow muddy guitar and drums, but then there is a great deal of synthesizers put to use that add an extra stylized tint of pink to the whole experience. The electronics give these songs a lot of personality and are really the key piece in the puzzle of making them compelling.
