Pusha T - "Lunch Money" (Video)

The spacey, otherworldly by Kanye West on Pusha T's latest single "Lunch Money" makes for the perfect antithesis to Push's boastful coke rap lyrics, and sets the Virginia emcee up perfectly to release a new album that will make him worthy of being solidified as a true leader of new millennium hip hop. The video is also a practice in ideas that might not at first seem to go together: as Pusha arrogantly mocks the competition, around him is a stripped down, barren, drug-riddled environment dominated by pop lockers and hood rich dope boy decadence. It's a simplistic and unexpected approach, but it allows the song to take center stage. And at this stage, that's exactly how it should be as "Lunch Money" makes hip hop heads salivate for Pusha T's next full-length project.

To say that King Push is trying to come back with a vengeance after the sterling critical acclaim of last years' My Name Is My Name would be one hell of an understatement. Basically, you can still feel the hunger and desire in both Pusha's voice and Kanye's unorthodox, bouncy production on "Lunch Money." The take-no-prisoners attitude works almost too well for the Virginia native as he disrespectfully elbows his way back into the conversation of top-five dead or alive and arrogantly murders Kanye's skillfully crafted, almost extraterrestrial beat. Lines like "pocket give me everything I want/ride around with Miguel Cotto in the trunk" and "this is crime by design/if the crown ain't mine, tell me who am I behind" give point blank proof that Pusha is gunning for more than just being the current crown prince of Coke rap: he wants both that and the title of "best rapper alive" all to himself.

Future - Honest

Between the basic flows, uninteresting lyricism, and ridiculous "singing" that's barely masked by the auto-tune it's slathered in, I'm honestly not finding much of anything to like about the new Future record. The beats are decent sometimes...

Pusha T - "King Push"

October 8th is the release date for Pusha T's forthcoming album, My Name Is My Name, and I'm pretty psyched given all of the solid tracks that have dropped thus far. "King Push" just adds to that winning streak with a wild beat that's both zany and eerie. Lyrically, Pusha drops some obvious lines--uh, "Rage against the machine, black Zach De La Rocha"--but ushers in some solid 'caine-themed wordplay as well. Enjoy!

Pusha T - "Nosetalgia" ft. Kendrick Lamar

Pusha T drops another track from his forthcoming album, My Name Is My Name, and with tracks like "Sweet Serenade" and "Numbers On the Boards," this album is shaping up to be the best things G.O.O.D. Music's has dropped since its inception.

As usual, Pusha brings a lot of coke talked that's heavily coded with wordplay and double entendres that make replaying this thing worth it. The sparse guitar-driven beat ain't bad either. Kendrick Lamar's verse follows through with the druggy themes, but delivers the kind of vivid storytelling we've come to expect from albums like Section .80 and GKMC. Enjoy!

Look for My Name Is My Name on Oct. 8th.

Jonwayne - Cassette 3: The Marion Morrison Mixtape

Rapper and producer Jonwayne has a new mixtape available through Stones Throw Records. Cassette 3 is a delightfully whacky and eclectic affair, beginning with the soulful and jazzy "Ode to Mortality" and going on to co-opt the clunky, jarring instrumental from Pusha T's "Numbers On the Boards" on the following track.

The tape also features verses from fellow Brainfeeder affiliates Jeremiah Jae, Zeroh, Oliver the 2nd, and even Flying Lotus himself (under his Captain Murphy moniker.) Enjoy!

Pusha T - "Numbers On The Boards" (Bloodsport Remix)

When it comes to hip hop, Pusha T's "Numbers On The Boards" might be one of the biggest growers for me this year. The song is not only loaded with some of my favorite wordplay of 2013, but the beat is the epitome of forward-thinking creativity.

The track has been giving the remix treatment thanks to Bloodsport, and it's also been paired with the fantastic RUFFMERCY-produced video I've embedded above. You might recognize the visual style from some recent Blue Daisy vids.

Download the remix here, and enjoy!
