Al Lover- Heavy Hippies (Cheapdrugsfreelove)

New TracksadminComment

Fresh off the Al Lover Bandcamp, here's a new set of instrumentals that combine the schools of hip hop, garage rock, and psychedelic rock. The sounds that come together on this thing are hard, heavy, and grimy. Tons of wailing solos, tarnished guitar chords, and lumbering beats.

I also wanna note that Al is pretty great when it comes to mixing his sounds with the sounds he's sampling. It's almost as if the hip hop beats he's throwing against these vintage rock samples were meant to be there. Nice attention to mixing and texture, for sure.

Enjoy the free mixtape, and make sure to check out the EP Al's got out on iTunes.

Al Lover Remixes the Oh Sees

Cali's Al Lover takes on a track from the latest Oh Sees album, Castlemania. For as long as I've known about the guy, he's loved taking fuzzed-out garage rock and throwing a healthy dose of hip hop behind it. He's still singing the same song, but I'm happy to sing along.

This track actually comes off of Al Lover's latest album, Distorted Reverberations (of Reverberating Distortion). The album will soon be released as a full download, and here are the songs that'll be remixed:

Track list: 1. Natural Child - White Man's Burden 2. Shapes Have Fangs - Terlingua 3. Thee Oh Sees - If I Stay Too Long 4. White Fence - Sticky Fruitman Has Faith 5. King Tuff - Sun Medallion 6. Jeff The Brotherhood - Hey Friend 7. Ty Segall - Fist Heart Mighty Dawn Dartß 8. Davila 666 - Yo Seria Otro 9. Night Beats - H-Bomb 10. Moonhearts - I Can Go On

Free Album: Al Lover's Creative Controlled

We've talked this guy up before, and maybe we're a little sorry about it. His moniker is Al Lover. A while back, Al released an ambitious remix project, splicing and mashing numerous artists from the Woodsist record label into a giant megamix. Hearing lo-fi psychedelia crossbred with hip hop beats was quite the treat, but spreading word about this project only resulted in its eventual removal.

In response to the requested take-down, Al has released a new mix titled Creative Controlled: A new set of beats and loops set to the theme of copyright. Loads of vocal samples throughout the 30-minute piece argue for the freedom of artists to build upon, copy, and remix another person's work. No matter what side of the isle you're on with this issue, the music is pretty catchy. Download Creative Controlled below.

Al Lover- "Baby Please" ‡ VIDEO

A while back, I posted a "megamix" of songs from the Woodsist label put together by a bright, young mixer and masher, Al Lover. Well, my posting of the mix was partially what got him in hot water with Woods and the good people at Force Field PR. He was asked to take the mix off his blog, but Al hasn't stopped doing what he does best.

He's got a concept album of sorts on the way titled Creative Controlled, and it's loosely based around themes of  music piracy and copyright. "Baby Please" is from the LP, and I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I am. The beat delectable, and the vocal samples are placed perfectly. -

Woodsist Remixed?! ‡ MP3

It's not REMIX WEDNESDAY or anything, but this project is just too weird and downright outgoing to leave unposted. To put it simply, this is one remix album to rule them all.

This story starts with the synergy of two elements: San Fran music producer "Al Lover" and the blog-o-sphere-approved record label Woodsist. Woodsist specializes in some pretty distinct and eerie music, touting acts such as Woods, Ganglians, and Real Estate. Lo-fi fiends such as Wavves and Kurt Vile have landed releases there, too. Al has taken it upon himself to remix over a dozen tracks from the label into a tight combination of chunky beats and looped samples. It's your only chance of hearing hip hop vibes laced into the unusually fuzzy and psychedelic sounds that Woodsist releases.

I love most of the songs being remixed on this album, but listening to this a very different experience. Don't put your ears on this expecting to hear Woodsist in another light. Al has turned this into something all his own. These tracks couldn't have been made without the originals, but something just as novel has come out of them. Fans of crate-dug instrumental antics take notice.

Here's a tracklisting, a link to download the album, and a SoundCloud stream of every track:

The Fresh & Onlys- What Goes In Circles Ganglians- 100 Years Kurt Vile- Breathing Out The Art Museums- So Your Baby Doesn't Love You Anymore Woods- Born To Lose The Mayfair Set- Three of Me Moon Duo- In the Trees Meneguar- The Morning, the Night Fergus & Geronimo- Last Letter Meth Teeth- I Was Young Wavves- Vermin Real Estate- Black Lake Woods- 'Til the Sun Rips
