#$ - Hash Money

New Trackstheneedledrop1 Comment

Previously mentioned hip hop duo #$ has just put out its first project on Smokers Cough Records, the eight-track-long mini-album Hash Money. It's a breezy listen, clocking in a little short of the half hour mark, but it showcases everything that makes its two members so great. New Jersey MC GDP is a clever and charismatic wordsmith and Space Jesus' production style is definitely his own - I'll go with the above Bandcamp page's "electro hip-hop bass" description of his beats. The twosome ultimately pack a lot into Hash Money, resulting in a decidedly short-winded but substantial listen. Enjoy!

GDP - "The Next Day"

A hilarious and breezy new music video from New Jersey's GDP for his song "The Next Day." The B&W music video of nothing more than the MC taking occasional sips from a bottle of Coca Cola kind of reminds me of a recent Xiu Xiu one - Both leave me feeling parched. But while GDP might leave me in want of a beverage, he thankfully does not leave me in want of good bars; they're as solid as ever here. H. Jon Benjamin deserves more shout-outs.

"The Next Day" is taken from Permanent Vocation, due out via Smokers Cough later this year.

The Man From Somewhere Else & Aoi - "One Friend" ft. GDP & Shape

Underground MC The Man From Somewhere Else has teamed up with producer Aoi for an EP that's gonna be dropping sometime in January of 2014. Here's a trailer:

The duo recently dropped the track that's streaming at the top of this post, which features verses from Shape and Jersey-ite GDP. It's a grimy beat with even grimier rhymes thrown on top. Not really a theme or concept going into this song, but there is some impressive straight spittin' going on throughout this string. Enjoy!

GDP & The Wrong Address w/Jimmy Frankenstein - "The Art Of Blowing Glass vs. The Act Of Breaking It"

Previously mentioned rapper GDP is usually an odd and hilariously foul-mouthed dude, but this new track of his, which is featured on his new 12" via Run For Cover Records, is one of the darkest, moodiest songs I've ever heard him drop. The lyrics depict an incredibly damaged relationship with someone I call a "love interest" in the loosest sense of the word. It's actually downright depressing, and that's not only due to GDP's lyrical ability, but the atmospheric instrumental he's riding on as well. Enjoy!

GDP- "Funnel Buddies"

Truly disturbed hip hop eccentric GDP drops a new track from his SoundCloud titled "Funnel Buddies," which seems to be a raunchy track about a long line of friends with benefits. While having no-strings-attached relations isn't exactly a refreshing topic in hip hop, GDP seems to take it to a kind of hilarious and thought-provoking extreme.

GDP- "Old El Paso"

A new track from New Jersey's most vile, perverse, and unsettling rapper, GDP. The dude's lyrics, like usual, are dark, and make me wonder if he kisses his mother with that mouth.

The beat here really makes the track. The refined string sections wrap around the rhythm like a snake crushing it's prey, and kinda gives GDP's evil persona a theatrical platform to stand on. The end result brings the mental image of a top hat-wearing villain who laughs maniacally as lightning strikes in the background.
