Karriem Riggins - "Chopped Worm"

New TracksadminComment

Detroit hip hop producer and J Dilla associate Karriem Riggins has a new track out that's in tribute to the recently deceased Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner, who was once the frontman for the legendary Ohio Players.

Not only is Riggins creating an incredibly funky sendoff for the band's former singer, but he's uncovering a bit of hip hop history here by chopping up one of the group's most sampled songs, "Funky Worm." The track's squealing keyboard leads have turned up in numerous hip hop releases from the West Coast. From N.W.A. to Kendrick Lamar, "Funky Worm" isn't going out of style any time soon.

[audio:http://www.stonesthrow.com/jukebox/karriem_moogy.mp3] Multi-instrumentalist and hip hop producer Kariem Riggins has a new collection of instrumentals dropping on Stones Throw later this year titled Alone Together, which is kind of the culmination of two collections of instrumentals titled Alone and Together. Alone is currently out, Together is dropping next month, and they're dropping as a collection in October. Yeah, I know, that's a lotta releases for what's essentially one project.

However, from what I've heard of Alone Together so far, I'd say this collection of beats is particularly deserving of such attention. The above instrumental "Moogy Foog It" is especially funky, featuring a sharp and punchy beat graced with a quirky synth line.

And believe me when I say the variety doesn't stop there. Stream some more clips of tracks right here. It's no wonder this guy used to produced for Slum Villiage, Common, Talib Kweli, and the Roots.

Look for the official release of Alone Together on October 23rd.
