Hot Sugar - "Erica" ft. The GTW

VideosadminComment

One of the most underrated producers out there right now just dropped a new music video for the track "Erica," and it's just great on all fronts. Not only is a soulful, sensual tune that features a bit of heartbreak, but the song's got this bitterness to it that's slightly comedic. Just try not to laugh at lines like "Why'd you quit your only job to be a full-time pain in my ass?" What's even funnier is the music video concept, which sees Hot Sugar looking aggravated with what looks like one of those RealDolls. I think having his significant other played by an inanimate object plays into the theme of the song as well since the doll is essentially dependent on him to keep the relationship going. Amirite? Enjoy!

M|O|D- M|O|D III

A compilaion of simple, hyped instrumentals coming from the M|O|D crew's latest collection of tracks, M|O|D III. These guys take hints from footwork, trap rap, and chopped & screwed production, pulling all these styles together into a strange, atmospheric hip hop gumbo. Though there seems to be about a half a dozen producers on this compilation, the songs are amazingly consistent in style and direction. It's pretty surprising that so many different producers would create such similar material, but I suppose it's not that impossible considering a lot of the sounds showcased on this compilation are relatively hot right now.

But I digress, it's a solid comp. Give it a listen above, or grab it for five bones on Bandcamp.

Doug- "No Rush"

Doug is a Florida-born MC whose eccentric personality makes for a pretty good listen. The dude finds lyrical inspiration in everything from traffic to the speed of life on the track streaming above, "No Rush." The jazzy beat is manipulated for maximum atmosphere, and it brings a spacey feel that I'm finding similar to that new Shabazz Palaces album.

Grab a copy of Doug's new EP, Doug Life, right here.

GDP- "Dublin"

New TracksadminComment

I can't remember how exactly I heard of him, but I've been following New Jersey rapper GDP on SoundCloud for about a month or so now. He's seriously growing on me, and it's hard to figure out why. The dude is highly lyrical and clever.

Even though the dude's latest track, "Dublin," is under two minutes, I find a new line to laugh at every time I listen. I think my current favorite has got to be "he could spit, cuz he's seen some shit. If these walls could talk, they'd probably plead the fifth."

Stream the track above and keep your eye on this guy. He's too eccentric to ignore. The dude has a new album that dropped in May, too. Grab a copy here.

Music For Your Plants- "Enchanted Sister" ‡ STREAM

So this track came with a nondescript e-mail saying this self-titled Music For Your Plants EP would come out "sometime this month." Where it will be and how it will get there, I'm not sure.

If the track below is any clue to the location of this music, you'd most likely find it on a surfboard in the middle of an ocean made of LSD. On "Enchanted Sister," the mix is loaded with animal noises, schmaltzy percussion, and atmospheric melodies. It feels very tropical, but there's something a little eerie about it, too. There are too many weird moments to casually listen along as if everything were completely normal--even if this track might fit in nicely at an island resort.

What did you think of this track? Did it rule? Was it too lo-fi? Was it too disjointed? Too awesome?

Entrepreneurs- "Hunting Roger Rabbit" ‡ STREAM

Entrepreneurs is an odd pop project from the UK. Its vocals, eccentric and unapologetic croons, are almost off-putting, but the beats are way too intricate to cast this music off as sheer indulgence.

"Hunting Roger Rabbit" is the forthcoming single from Entrepreneur's new EP Uv Been Robbed (Joking, But Not), and it's a real mutant gem. I don't know what this guy's production techniques are, but it sounds like he graduated from Flying Lotus University with a Bachelor's in beat-making. There's almost something Black Moth Super Rainbow-esque about it, too. Maybe it's the tension of being catchy and eerie at the same time.

You can pick up this single physically via Big Cartel, and you can grab the EP for whatever price you want via bandcamp. Stream the track below:
