Wavves - "All Star Goth"

New TrackstheneedledropComment

Wavves frontman Nathan Williams is re-releasing the band's self-titled debut for Record Store Day in honor of the album’s 10th anniversary. This previously unreleased track, “All Star Goth,” will be included on the reissue.

“All Star Goth” would be among the noisiest tracks on the exceptionally noisy Wavves. The heavily distorted guitars create a wall of sound that is suspended underneath echoing vocal harmonies. The song sounds like a combination of Car Seat Headrest’s Twin Fantasy (which it predates by 3 years) and the Beach Boys-esque vocals of Panda Bear’s "Comfy in Nautica."

The Wavves re-release will be available tomorrow on colored vinyl.

R. Stevie Moore- "Post Breakup Sex" (Loved)

R. Stevie Moore drops a cover of the Vaccines' "Post Breakup Sex," which was released on a 7" this past weekend on Record Store Day via O'Genesis Recordings.

In usual Moore, D.I.Y. fashion, the track is fuzzed out and eccentric. A lone snare drum keeps time against some tinny guitar chords, and a phantom bassline that softly reinforces the chord progression. Moore's voice removes the bitterness from the Vaccines' track, though; replacing it with something much kookier. Come to think of it, the subject matter of this song isn't too far from the kind of odd relationship dynamics Moore has sung about in the past, too.

Actually, I think this cover was destined to be made. I now believe in a higher musical power.

Tim Hecker- "Suffocation Raga for John Cale"

A track has been released from the upcoming Record Store Day release of John Cale remixes from his Extra Playful EP. This Tim Hecker track is an ambient song filled with layers of humming synthesizers at multiple tones, hitting some really dark frequencies in order to create a heavy atmosphere. The song progresses through different arrangements of these synths while keeping that dark, atmospheric mood consistent throughout.

Superchunk / Coliseum Cover the Misfits

Aside from sales and a celebration of what makes buying physical albums great, here's another reason to look forward to Record Store Day on 4/16: A split 7'' of Misfits covers from Superchunk and Coliseum.

The Misfits's importance in underground music is no secret, and it's great to see their darkened approach to punk music is still relevant today. All you need to know is Superchunk is taking on "Horror Business," and Coliseum will be raging on the song "Bullet." Listen to Superchunk's cover below:
