Surfer Blood- Tarot Classics

Awesome! Another audio review where I'm accompanied by my good friend Derek. He's the best. Number one! Anyway, in the last episode of this series, we were talking about some friggin' death metal. That's all well and good, but you can't be listening to extreme stuff all the time. Gotta ease up every once in a while.

That's what we were trying to do with this new EP from Florida band Surfer Blood. I liked the band's debut album Astro Coast a bit. There were some undeniably stand-out songs all over that thing, and Derek felt the same way. Needless to say, we went into this EP expecting some good things. The review:

Although we haven't heard much from Surfer Blood regarding plans for a new album, the Florida power pop outfit has been keeping busy since the release of its debut, Astro Coast, last year.

This past weekend, the group brought their sunny guitar leads and melodies to Denmark for the Roskilde Festival, and a few days before, they dropped this fresh new cover song for fans.

"Hey Sandy" was originally written and recorded by Polaris, a short-lived project that included members of New Haven, Connecticut's Miracle Legion, a great band who don't get nearly enough credit. The original version was also the theme song from the Nickelodeon television show "The Adventures of Pete & Pete," which aired during the mid-90s.

On the Surfer Blood take, the effervescent, lo-fi vocals and catchy percussion are highlights, while the heavily reverb'd guitar is only icing on the cake. Stream or download the track above.

Weird Wives / Band In Heaven Split ‡ MP3s

A while back, we talked up an up-and-coming shoegaze duo by the name of Band in Heaven. They have a digital EP floating around the internet, and they've just laid two tracks from it on a new split with the band Weird Wives.

The band is a side-project from the boys in Surfer Blood, and can only be described as being a mutant piece of grunge punk. On the two tracks they bring to this split, the band showcases some rough guitars and creepy vocals. "Wet Blanket" trudges along eerily, while my personal favorite, "Head Bugs," sounds something like a Cramps 45 spun at 33 1/3 with the volume turned all the way up.

Dig on the split below. If you like it, snag it for 3 bones on the Band in Heaven bandcamp.
