Islands - "Wave Forms"

New Tracksalex nicollComment

Nick Thorburn, the man behind Islands (and The Unicorns, RIP now who will cut our hair?) releases this new cut off of upcoming LP Ski Mask. The song, a slightly funky piano-pop song with existential lyrics, follows the path of much of Islands' older work. Any worries about too much sameness are erased when the chorus hits with rolling marimbas and descending synth lines. Nick sings about "moving on" but really, we'd prefer it if you didn't dude.

Islands is the pet project of Nick Thorburn--formerly of the Unicorns--and Anti- has seen fit to put up a stream of the band's new album, which is set to berelease today! If you have listened to the songs they have released thus far from the album “This is not a song” and “Hallways” you should have fairly good indication of what you’re in store for here. There is a real catchy friendliness to the tracks here, which is largely due to the slower nature of them. It is definitely a light avant-pop album, but there isn’t anything inherently wrong with that.

A full stream of the album provided on YouTube via Sub Pop Recs. Mister Heavenly is somewhat of an indie rock supergroup, and I don't care how many times that word has been used thus far to describe this project.

Mr. Heavenly features Nick Diamonds of Islands and the Unicorns, Honus Honus of Man Man, and Joe Plummer of Modest Mouse and the Shins. They've all got backgrounds I assumed would clash pretty hard on this new album, Out of Love, but surprisingly, these three dudes blend their influences pretty nicely. Look for Out of Love on Sub Pop now.
