Washed Out - "Don't Give Up"

Videosalex nicollComment

Washed Out--a.k.a. Ernest Greene--releases this video for "Don't Give Up" off of his upcoming album, Paracosm.

Paracosm means a detailed fantasy world, and this video looks to make the creatures of our own world into the creatures that inhabit a paracosm. The video consists entirely of close-ups of animals that shift in color as frequently and dramatically as the phaser effect on the keyboards. The song itself is a lush jungle groove, the soundtrack to rambling in a humid environment. Even if the song doesn't do it for you, this video, courtesy of director Kate Moross, is a must watch.

Washed Out- Within and Without

Washed Out's debut LP definitely brings a comparative change from the project's early EPs. I guess my issue is that the change just isn't enough to make me wanna stick with this album over previous efforts. There are flashes of progression and ambition here and there, but tracks like "Eyes Be Closed" and "Echoes" seem to repeat old ideas and pump out great sounds without backing them with great songs.

So, as you can figure, I was a little underwhelmed at certain points of this album. But maybe there will be future releases from this project I'll like more. Washed out, we'll be in touch.

Washed Out- "Amor Fati"

New Tracksadmin1 Comment

It's the second track to drop from Washed Out's forthcoming album, Within and Without. Admittedly, I'm digging this one a lot more than the first. To me, "Eyes Be Closed" seemed to tread a lot of the same water the Life of Leisure EP did. Though I love the sounds on that release, I'm not sure if I'm interested in hearing them relived all over again.

"Amor Fati" plays with a lot of the same nostalgic elements, but hits harder and doesn't drown itself out in too much atmosphere. It's a nice, solid piece of synth pop with plenty of highs and lows.

Look for this album on Sub Pop on July 12th.

On his latest track, Washed Out is doing more revisiting than reinventing. If Life of Leisure was one of those '09 releases that soundtracked your summer, maybe it'll sound great to see this project sticking with its guns. Is this track for you? Will you dig on it? Find out in this review. Is "chillwave" a legit genre?
