Danish singer, songwriter, composer, and pop experimenter Agnes Obel is returning with her first record in six years. The Meaning of Flowers, out out September 18 via Deutsche Grammophon, is the followup to 2020's Myopia. The record was written, recorded, arranged, and produced by Obel herself in her own studio in Berlin, where she's based.
With the news comes firt single "Laymelli," which you can hear below:
Athough the album was crafted by Obel, she wasn't fully alone, and is joined across the 12 tracks by guest musicians on violin, viola, cello, bass, lap steel, harmonium, flute, sax, percussion, and backing vocals.
According to a press release, The Meaning of Flowers takes its inspiration from a wide myriad of sources, "from the poetry of Enheduanna (the world’s first named author) and the ideas of philosophers Hannah Arendt and Emanuele Coccia, to the Danish pop scene of the ‘80s and ‘90s."
Since 2020, Obel has given birth to a daughter, to whom she dedicates the record: "She who has changed me and raised me and taught me so much – and I can feel so much more awaits to be learned."
Obel also has a few shows lined up in Europe and Oceania. Check those dates below.
