Dr. Dre, legendary rapper and producer, endorsed the use of artificial intelligence in music in a New York Times interview published Sunday.
Dre and Beats By Dre co-founder Jimmy Iovine were asked by the NYT if they view AI as a threat to music, with Dre saying:
"It’s a new tool for creativity. Some people are afraid of learning new things. I’m embracing it. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen with this."
Iovine followed up with a similar sentiment, explaining that other known producers are utilizing AI under the table: "They’re using it, they just don’t want to admit it."
The approval of AI comes on the heels of a broader cultural debate over whether the technology has a place in arts and entertainment. It's controversial at best, with many of its supporters facing significant backlash. For example, a clip of Grammy Award-winning producer Rick Ruben has recently resurfaced on X, in which he suggests that utilizing AI is "punk rock."
There’s nothing punk about AI. AI is the opposite of DIY the opposite of anti establishment. It’s spoon fed regurgitation. It’s the end of new.
