Latin Grammy-nominated artist and producer Ela Minus and experimental Miami-meets-Brooklyn club producer Nick Léon have teamed up for a new collaborative EP, qué les pasó a mis amigos?, out August 7 via Smugglers Way (Domino). The two also released the lead single "espiral" today, and they've announced a show together at the ICA London for Smugglers Way's first-ever label showcase.
"espiral" comes with an official visualizer. Watch/listen to the new track below:
Minus and Léon's creative partnership began in 2024, when both were working on their respective breakout albums, DÍA and Tropical Entropy. The two electronic artists worked together for the futuristic, tropical house track "Ghost Orchid," featured on the Miami/NYC producer's record. Their collaboration evolved over the years, with Léon remixing the Colombian/NYC artist's critically-acclaimed DÍA single "QQQQ."
"It was so free," León said of his collaborative artistic process via press release. "There were unspoken understandings of what we wanted to do. That’s not normal." Minus added, "We immediately felt this kinship."
qué les pasó a mis amigos?, translated to "what happened to my friends?", was co-produced by Léon and Minus, merging his club-forward and physically-conscious beats with her punk and DIY sensibilities. With hypnotic and cyclical drums, cutting synths, and introspective lyrics, the new EP aims to find friendship and certainty in a maze of emotional burnout, scattered attention, and doubt.
qué les pasó a mis amigos? will be released digitally on August 7 via Smugglers Way, with a 12” vinyl edition arriving November 20 featuring remixes by Loidis, Guedra Guedra, and Brenda.
