Miguel condemns racist attacks against partner Margaret Zhang and their family

Miguel is speaking out after what he describes as a year of escalating harassment against his family.

In a statement shared to Instagram, the singer said his loved ones have faced racism, stalking, invasions of privacy, and false allegations, with recent attacks against his partner, Margaret Zhang, prompting him to address the behavior publicly.

"Recent racist and anti-Asian attacks directed at my partner - including comments and DMs, as well as abusive comments about my child - crossed a line that should require no explanation," he wrote. "People can have opinions about me. About the music. About the work. I accept the realities that come with doing anything in public. But racism, threats, harassment, stalking, invasions of privacy, and targeting of children are abuse. Not opinion."

Zhang is a prominent figure in fashion and media. The Chinese-Australian filmmaker, photographer, writer, and creative director became editor-in-chief of Vogue China in 2021. She departed the publication in 2024 after three years.

"It doesn’t become acceptable because someone dresses it up as criticism, fandom, speculation, or 'concern,'" Miguel continued in his post. "Responsibility also lies with organizations and individuals that knowingly amplify or enable racism, harassment, or false allegations for attention and engagement."

The statement arrives as Miguel and Zhang prepare to welcome their second child. Zhang revealed her pregnancy while accompanying Miguel to the HollyShorts Film Festival in Los Angeles on August 23, where the couple attended a screening of Papá Melissa, a documentary they executive produced.

Miguel closed his statement by warning that he has pursued action when legal or ethical boundaries have been crossed and will continue to do so.

“If you participate in this behavior, you are not supporting me,” he wrote. “You are not part of this community.”
