Legendary rapper Mystikal has found himself back in prison after he was sentenced to 20 years in prison Wednesday after pleading guilty to raping in his home after a financial dispute.
The New Orleans rapper, whose real name is Michael Lawrence Tyler, pled to third-degree rape in March, which carried a sentencing cap of 20 years, five years less than the maximum punishment for the crime under Louisiana law.
The 55 year old ultimately lucked out as his plea reduced the original charge from first-degree rape, which carried an automatic life sentence.
In the days prior to his sentencing, Mystikal filed a motion to withdraw his guilty plea, saying he didn't have time to "fully consider the consequences" of his decision, but the judge in the case dismissed the request, according to WBRZ.
The victim spoke in court before his sentencing and asked the judge to give the Grammy-nominated emcee the maximum sentence, the TV station reported.
She told the court that Mystikal punched her, choked her, pulled out her braids and forcibly raped her at his home in Prairieville, Louisiana, about 18 miles from Baton Rouge, according to the report.
“If I did that to you, I deserve the max sentence,” he said in response, per WBRZ.
Already a registered sex offender, Mystikal must resume annual sex offender registration upon his eventual release. He spent six years in prison following his arrest for sexually assaulting his hairstylist in 2003.
Mystikal has been held without a bond at Ascension Parish Jail in Donaldsonville, Louisiana, since his 2022 arrest.
