Shearwater share new song featuring Laurie Anderson

Indie rock band Shearwater have been trickling out songs for their new album, The New World, for a couple months now. The record is out this Friday – July 31 – but today the group is sharing one final single: the album closer, "You and Your Dog." But this isn't just any Shearwater song – it's a 7-minute story-song featuring none other than art pop and spoken word icon Laurie Anderson.

Listen to the track below, along with a video shot by frontman Jonathan Meiburg:

The track does not feature any vocals from Meiburg, insteaf handing over those duties to Anderson, and she tells a story (written by Meiburg) about a memory from a beach visit with a friend and the friend's dog, over a serene instrumental.

Despite not having been written by Anderson, it does feel of a piece with the kind of storytelling she excels at: zeroing in on small moments of our humanness and exploring them as if they were a spacious as an open sky.

Of the song, Meiburg says "Laurie’s been a friend and hero of ours for a long time and when I wrote this story, it was easy to imagine in her voice. I was thrilled when she agreed to perform it."

The album features contributions from an array of other guests, including Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart, multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily, and drummer Thor Harris (who was a member of the band from 2001-2010), in addition to Meiburg's bandmates Emily Lee and Dan Duszynski.

You can pre-order the record here.
