Every crush is a little bit of a mirror, and sparklmami’s new single “si” is all about catching your own reflection.
Built on synthesizers and 1980s electric piano, it’s a bubbly, happy little statement of self-love that’s out now via Verve Records/slowplay, and follows her debut album, in this body.
Listen here:
sparklmami produced this track with longtime collaborators Eddie Burns behind the drums and William Corduroy on the bass, and as she says, “I was visualizing ‘shiny toy syndrome’ when I was making the song.” The title plays on that blind spot, the way the traits we find irresistible in someone else are often the ones we can’t see in ourselves.
in this body, which came out in June, is a sonic and visual look back at sparklmami’s childhood, with each song portraying a moment from her life. The album was made with sparklmami’s band, who improvised and brought ideas to the table as the songs were composed together. Burns and Corduroy serve as executive producers, with Josh Jessen on keys and synths, Kenneth Leftridge Jr. on saxophone, and Alex Trickett on percussion.
Before making music, sparklmami earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago, where her work explored memory and identity through dioramas of her childhood home and green screen recreations of the telenovelas she watched growing up.
sparklmami is fresh off a UK and European tour, where she performed with a trio in Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam, and closed it out in September at the COLORS: Tones of London showcase alongside Florence Road and M Huncho. She is set to perform next at the BRIC JazzFest in New York on October 16.
