Yeah, it's been about a year since Phantom Island. It's time for King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard to announce their next record.

Alien Metal — the twenty-eighth album of the maximalist, experimental group — was directly inspired by King Gizzard's bout of "rave shows" put on last year, as well as their foray into electronic music on 2023's The Silver Cord. It'll be out later this summer via (p)doom records. No official date has been announced yet. The first single "Level 5" is out now.

Last year, per "techno head of the group" Joey Walker's suggestion, the band added a Eurorack synthesizer to their massive sets, particularly for their special "rave" shows they'd host to prioritize and train their explorations into techno and EDM. "It completely rewired my brain," said member Stu Mackenzie via press release. "I was like, 'I'm going to forget everything I know about music and relearn it all from scratch'."

The album — pieced together after scrapping the most material the band has ever produced, according to statements in the press release — will meld the dominant subgenres of electronic music and thread them through King Gizzard's psychedelic lens. Bits of techno, jungle, hardcore, and house will be present throughout; "It sounds so crunchy, but also beautiful," per Mackenzie.

"Alien Metal goes really hard, but it also goes to really interesting places," adds Walker. "And it feels unique — it feels like us, still."

This August, King Gizzard will return to Buena Vista, CO for their Field of Vision Festival. Afterward, they'll return to New York's Forest Hills Stadium for a run of three headline performances, and they'll host another "rave show" at Brooklyn's Under The K Bridge Park. Tickets are available now.
