Samara Joy, Christian McBride, and Mei Semones will headline a concert celebrating Verve Records’ 70th anniversary on September 2 in New York City, as part of the free SummerStage series in Central Park.

Founded in 1956, Verve has spent seven decades as one of jazz’s defining labels, releasing landmark records by artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Joao Gilberto, and Stan Getz.

Joy, who is a six-time GRAMMY winner and Bronx native, will share the bill with McBride, an 11-time GRAMMY winner and Juilliard graduate whose career as a bassist and bandleader spans collaborations with jazz figures including McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, and Eddie Palmieri, as well as pop artists Sting, Paul McCartney, and Celine Dion. 

The anniversary show also features Semones and a lineup of friends: she’ll appear with aron!, Liana Flores, and John Rosenboro, all performing the music of Getz/Gilberto, Gilberto and Getz’s landmark 1964 collaborative album released on the label. Sparklmami will open the night with a DJ set. Doors open at 6pm, with the show running from 7pm to 10pm at the park’s Rumsey Playfield. 

The event is free and open to all ages, though, as with most SumerStage shows, it’s limited to whoever is able to make it out to Central Park that evening.
