Willa Kaplan announces debut album ‘Spine,’ shares new single “Nothing’s Sacred”

Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Willa Kaplan has announced her debut album, Spine, out February 19, 2027. Kaplan co-produced the record with her friend and drummer Andrew Tachine at his Echo Park home studio.

Alongside the announcement, Kaplan shared the driving lead single “Nothing’s Sacred,” along with a full-band live performance video filmed at Altamira Sound. Watch it here:

Kaplan says the song is about the concept of nature vs. nurture, and what it takes for a person’s core beliefs to be challenged. In the song’s narrative, that happens when you fall for someone and notice yourself changing in ways you didn’t see coming.

Spine itself is about learning to have a backbone, or a literal spine, in your own life and relationships. “It’s about coming to terms with the idea that nobody is going to give you permission but you,” Kaplan says.

The music also doubles as a sonic portrait of anxiety. Guitar swells, self-oscillating analog delay, pedal feedback, and white noise drift in and out of the ventricles of this record, meant to sound like they’re existing inside someone’s head. “Eventually the static dissipates, but never for long,” Kaplan explains.

Kaplan and Tachine spent a year making the album, which she described as a process that “felt very homegrown.” She said a Nina Simone quote she read near the end of recording stuck with her: “Freedom means no fear.”Kaplan added that she remembers telling herself she wanted to be fearless all in her own right, and this record is a tribute to that sentiment.
