Slow Animal - "Other Side"

VideostheneedledropComment

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1fnSQukBE4 Slow Animal is just 2 boyz based out of Philadelphia who wanna have fun. And fun they deliver on, producing energetic, surfy kinds of punk tunes that fans of Wavves are likely to enjoy. They also have a cat, judging from this black and white video for their new single "Other Side," just in case the music itself isn't fun enough. An EP of the same name is due out next Monday, and yeah, it's probably gonna be a good time. Check out the song above and enjoy!

The duo also dropped this four-track demo back in 2010 that you should give a quick listen if this type of music is your bag.

Kurt Vile - "Down in It" (Nine Inch Nails Cover)

Kurt Vile covers Nine Inch Nails Watch Kurt Vile's hazy take on Nine Inch Nails' very first single, "Down in It," for The A.V. Club's "A.V. Undercover" series. Kurt brings his easygoing charm to the track's "white rap" vocals, and receives able backing from bandmate Rob Laakso on electronics. Enjoy!

Although apparently inadvertent on Kurt's part, the timing could not be better for this cover. Nine Inch Nails' new album Hesitation Marks is due out next week via Columbia Records and is available to stream in full via iTunes.

And here's a review of this year's fantastic Wakin on a Pretty Daze:

Stream the New Glocca Morra LP

New TrackschriscapComment

In a Pennsylvania punk scene thoroughly sated with twinkly emo revival bands, Philadelphia punks Glocca Morra offer a refreshingly straightforward alternative.  Sure, their guitar riffs still feature occasional neck tapping, and their lyrics still speak of former girlfriends, wasted years and self-loathing, but there is nevertheless a refreshing quality to their music. Their new full length LP Just Married is their most accomplished release yet--11 short tracks of catchy, shout-along choruses, strained (but surprisingly un-whiny) vocals, and profanity-laced song titles. The briefest songs are also the best; the 2-minute opener demands to be sung along with, while the aggressive, Snowing-referencing "Why Am I Not Going Under Walter?" scans like an angry, drunk confession to best friend that you secretly love.

I think what I like most about Glocca Morra, as typified by Just Married, is that they veer so far away from taking themselves seriously that, as a listener, I can't help but feel like they're completely genuine. Their willingness to be silly also results in a lot of hilarious moments on this record, from the Dustin Hoffman photo on the cover to lines like, "Fuck dude, there's a black dog chewing on my neck!" This attitude is ultimately what's refreshing about this record. These guys are too good to be just another emo band, and frankly they seem too funny to actually be much of an emo band at all.

Just Married can be streamed in full at their bandcamp page and pre-ordered on vinyl from Kind of Like Records. The record officially drops July 10th.

Hop Along- Get Disowned

The Philadelphia-based trio Hop Along has a new record out titled Get Disowned on Hot Green Records, the label that fellow Pennsylvania punks Algernon Cadwallader founded. At 10 tracks, Get Disowned is their first full-length, and their most developed release yet. Get Disowned is a musically rich, instrumentally complicated record despite the band's power trio lineup, boasting unpredictable time signatures and song structures that consistently surprise. Twinkly guitar riffs blend with synths, power chords, and singer Frances Quinlan's evocative vocals for a disorienting and whimsical listen. Quinlan's gritty, wildly versatile voice is the real highlight here, along with her lyrics, which carefully balance silliness with more serious themes. With her unique knack for oddball melodies, this record is a fun trip that begs to be sung along with. Highlights include the second track "Tibetan Pop Stars," on which Quinlan gleefully admits, "I'm gonna be creeping on you so hard."
