Pusha T - "Lunch Money" (Video)

VideosContributor Jones1 Comment

The spacey, otherworldly by Kanye West on Pusha T's latest single "Lunch Money" makes for the perfect antithesis to Push's boastful coke rap lyrics, and sets the Virginia emcee up perfectly to release a new album that will make him worthy of being solidified as a true leader of new millennium hip hop. The video is also a practice in ideas that might not at first seem to go together: as Pusha arrogantly mocks the competition, around him is a stripped down, barren, drug-riddled environment dominated by pop lockers and hood rich dope boy decadence. It's a simplistic and unexpected approach, but it allows the song to take center stage. And at this stage, that's exactly how it should be as "Lunch Money" makes hip hop heads salivate for Pusha T's next full-length project.

To say that King Push is trying to come back with a vengeance after the sterling critical acclaim of last years' My Name Is My Name would be one hell of an understatement. Basically, you can still feel the hunger and desire in both Pusha's voice and Kanye's unorthodox, bouncy production on "Lunch Money." The take-no-prisoners attitude works almost too well for the Virginia native as he disrespectfully elbows his way back into the conversation of top-five dead or alive and arrogantly murders Kanye's skillfully crafted, almost extraterrestrial beat. Lines like "pocket give me everything I want/ride around with Miguel Cotto in the trunk" and "this is crime by design/if the crown ain't mine, tell me who am I behind" give point blank proof that Pusha is gunning for more than just being the current crown prince of Coke rap: he wants both that and the title of "best rapper alive" all to himself.

Pusha T - "King Push"

October 8th is the release date for Pusha T's forthcoming album, My Name Is My Name, and I'm pretty psyched given all of the solid tracks that have dropped thus far. "King Push" just adds to that winning streak with a wild beat that's both zany and eerie. Lyrically, Pusha drops some obvious lines--uh, "Rage against the machine, black Zach De La Rocha"--but ushers in some solid 'caine-themed wordplay as well. Enjoy!

Pusha T - "Numbers On The Boards"

When the audio Pusha T's "Numbers On The Boards" dropped, I was pretty flabbergasted by the instrumental. The sharp, choppy percussion fits oddly against sampled shouts and a driving bassline. It's a weird, weird beat, but what's even more surprising is Pusha T doesn't sound at all shaken by the unorthodox instrumental. He sounds smoother than ever on this new track, which he's just dropped some visuals for. Uh, I'm not sure what the budget was on this--it might have been nothing--but that doesn't seem to shake Pusha's confidence either. I think the greatest expense this video had was the flare that was lit five seconds in. Enjoy!
