Sunn O))) & Ulver - "Eternal Return" (excerpt)

New TracksadminComment

An excerpt from a soon-to-be-released track that features the artistic of both Sunn O))) and Ulver. Yes, Sunn O))) and Ulver! If you're into the heavier and darker side of music, these are two names you're undoubtedly familiar with, and to see them together in front of one song title is pretty exciting.

The excerpt streaming above is pretty moving, and there's more where that came from--obviously. Of course the entirety of "Eternal Return" hasn't been revealed, and there are two more songs which land on this forthcoming LP, Terrestrials, as well.

The LP's release date is looking like February 4th at this point. Enjoy what you hear in this stream until then!

FOODMAN -「IROIRO」

New TracksadminComment

Back in March, I told you to meet Foodman, and now he's got a new full-length out I'd love for you to hear. As usual, the guy keeps his tracks pretty short, landing under two minutes much of the time; however, that doesn't prevent his tracks from having any impact. Many of them seem so off-kilter and abstract, that they continually engage. Enjoy!

Stone Titan - Scratch 'N Sniff

New Tracksadmin4 Comments

Some noisy, guttural, and seething sludge metal from the guys in Stone Titan on this new record of theirs, Scratch 'N Sniff. There ain't much about this abum that comes off as friendly, so watch out. The groovy riffage blares, and the band relentlessly layers a lot of it with ear-piercing guitars. Not only that, but their song titles are pretty unforgiving as well.

Stream the whole thing via the widget above, and enjoy!

Holy Ghost! - "Teenagers In Heat" (LOVED)

New TracksadminComment

Some strong, melodic, and catchy dance pop from the guys in Holy Ghost! on the song streaming above, "Teenagers In Heat."

It's a track that's been co-produced by James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, and I think the band's direction on this song is pretty interesting. It's just as pop-oriented as one would expect if you've heard the band's debut LP, but Holy Ghost! seems to be shedding a bit of that post-punk and DFA-centered edginess that made their debut a little aggressive.

Instead, they're embracing their new wave side, " target="_blank">which they've done before, but they're coming through with much more melody this time around; they're coloring their songs with numerous synth layers for a prettier impression.

The vocals are still really emotive, and the groove is undeniable as well! Enjoy!

CAS - "Walkin'" and "All Hallows'"

VideosDannySpitsComment

CAS is a UK rapper related to the grime scene, and the MC supposedly has a full-length release in the works titled Commerical, but it has yet to receive a release date. In the mean time, check out the videos for "Walkin'" and "All Hallows'" above and below.

CAS adopts a decidedly dark aesthetic, spitting subversive lyrics and appearing as a masked figure in videos filled with disorienting images. These ingredients add up to a gimmick in many rappers, but CAS's words seem to reflect genuine struggles. "Walkin'" in particular depicts a broken down, aimless youth who turns to alcohol to cope with listlessness, and the production fits the MC's grim tone like a loose-fitting, rain-soaked hoodie.

With frequent Danny Brown collaborator Skywlkr providing the beat on "All Hallows'," the song achieves a sinister boom bap status. "Walkin'" offers the true instrumental highlight, however, with a minimalistic pairing of breezy synthesizer chords and warm, easygoing bass; it takes a risk by forgoing percussion entirely, but the bass line carries enough momentum to lay a strong rhythmic foundation. While it is admirable for being so unconventional, what truly sets it apart is the way it represents the lyrical themes so well. It doesn't force any emotion upon the listener, and rather accurately represents the acceptance CAS portrays in his lyrics: he understands that his life isn't what he wants it to be, and now he's just trying to figure out where to go next.
