Danny Brown - Old

Reviewsadmin4 Comments

Rapper Danny Brown returns with Old. It's an album that mirrors the Detroit native's constant cycle of drug-fueled partying and remorse that was introduced on 2011's XXX. The major difference this time around being heavier instrumentals and Danny's split personalities feeling even more at odds.

Check out the Rollo Jackson-directed music video for Danny Brown's new song "Dip." Like the RUFFMERCY-helmed video for "ODB," this new video is a twisted and druggy onslaught of quick cuts, zany effects, and colorful scrawling, all of which wonderfully complement the MC's brashness, as well as the banger of an instrumental whose drop sounds a bit like "Harlem Shake." Also, this.

"Dip" will be featured on Old, due out October 8 via Fool's Gold.

Danny Brown - "Side A (Old)"

Detroit rapper Danny Brown drops another track from his forthcoming Old album, which is set for a release at the end of this month on Fool's Gold. Lyrically and vocally, Danny really does sound like an older version of himself, rapping about some grimy, grimy stuff in a normal vocal register. While I like the over-the-top singles he's been releasing lately, this is the Danny I can vibe with for a whole album--especially when he's against a beat this thick, bass-y, and crushing!

At long last, Danny Brown's Old has been given an official release date, and now we also have a new track and video to further whet our appetites. "ODB"'s instrumental is just as delightfully frantic and zany as Danny Brown's signature flow, and the video it's accompanied by is no less madcap. Enjoy!

Old is due out September 30 via Fool's Gold. A reminder of how great his 2011 effort XXX was:

Portugal. The Man - "Evil Friends (Jake One Remix)" feat. Danny Brown

Portugal. The Man have enlisted hip hop producer Jake One to helm a remix of their latest LP's title track, "Evil Friends." Danny Brown jumps aboard, delivering a fast, hard-hitting, and surprisingly leery verse about the second-hander mindset running rampant around him. Give it a listen above!

Portugal. The Man's Evil Friends is out now via Atlantic Records, and it was recently announced that Danny Brown's much anticipated Old will officially be released on September 30 via Fool's Gold Records.

Paul White - "Watch the Ants"

Paul White is most known for producing for Danny Brown, and is producing multiple tracks off of Danny Brown's upcoming Old. He is also readying his own release, the EP Watch The Ants, and has just released a video for the eponymous track off of the EP. The track takes much of the sonic material of early Boards of Canada: children sing-songs, 70's television-show synths, and breakbeats, but makes something much different out of them. Where Boards of Canada create serene music for the point between sleep and waking, "Watch the Ants" is urgent, frantic and swampy.

Linked HERE is a post to the song Pink Eyes by Danny Brown that Paul White produced, flipping an Eno sample.

Foxygen- "Make It Known" (Loved)

Here is a track from Jagjaguwar's latest signing, Foxygen. They're a songwriting duo consisting of Sam France and Jonathan Rado. First track, first listen, it was love. It was love, guys! But I have to admit I'm sure that has a bit to do with how familiar the territory these guys are trudging in is to me.

Foxygen may be young, but they've got old souls, embracing the artsy rock and pop sensibilities of the Velvet Underground while simultaneously bringing the gusto of old school Rolling Stones. Oh, yeah, and the impressive, varied instrumentation and production of a great Kinks record like Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround (Part One). While Foxygen's style has been done time and time again, they're undeniably eccentric and creative with it. It's to the point where they really manage to leave their own mark.

The opening muddy guitar and wailing synth on "Make It Known" give way to some pretty dramatic vocals. It's a nice start to the track, but then Sam France's voice reaches down deep and starts delivering these passionate, Jagger-esque vocals that I can't help but fall for.

Things get weirder with strange vocal noises, some "ooh la la" chorus vocals, and some swelling horns. The track manages to change gears quickly around 1:20 mark, and becomes a straight up rocker complete with strangely mixed hand claps. Some saloon-style piano interjects into the middle of the track and brings the song into its third phase. Screams of "TALK TALK TALK" make things feel pretty liberating and exciting.

A large, church-sized chorus appears almost out of nowhere, and just shines gloriously. A big, horn-kissed, and jazzy finish brings the track to a close, giving the track a feel of a stage show or Broadway performance. Every musical transition feels like a costume change or an attention-demanding plot-twist.

Wow! Just wow. These guys not only have penned a tune thats as memorable as it is varied, but the production on here goes above and beyond. Way beyond. It has a vintage, messy feel; however, it's also incredibly detailed. Almost too detailed for words. I could listen, listen, and listen again, still picking up new sonic nuggets.
