Hopsin - Knock Madness

Cali rapper Hopsin has a tight flow and rhymes that don't mince words. While I like the more hard-hitting tracks on this new LP of his, there just aren't enough of them to balance out the sickening melodrama that happens on a great deal of this new LP's songs.

The Dirty Nil- Little Metal Baby Fist

The Dirty Nil is bringing out some grungy garage rock that is hitting me in all the right ways. These three tracks, which can be bought in the form of a 7', desire to be played louder than speakers could ever dream of.

The band had a fantastic sense of manipulating volume and delivering utterly compelling raw shouting vocals on top of that instrumentation. Musically they definitely hold their indie influences tight, but bring it into their own raw aggravated and energized style. The Dirty Nil has everything going for them with this release: heart stopping energy, unrelenting vocals, and  compelling compositions.

El-P- "Tougher Colder Killer" ft. Despot and Killer Mike

New Tracksadmin4 Comments

El-P drops a new track from his forthcoming album Cancer For Cure, featuring verses from Killer Mike and Despot. I love the song concept, too. To me, it seems to poke fun at the ongoing race in hip hop to come off tougher than the next guy. C'mon, guys. We all know that race has already been won.

But seriously, it's a dimension worth attacking, and El-P does it with both guns blazin'. Despot and Mike come through just as hard, creating a superhero trio of ultra-aggressive rappers that tag team this beat like heavyweight champs. Body slam! Powerbomb! Piledriver! DDT!

Look for this new album on May 25th.

Nude Beach- II

Brooklyn-based Nude Beach are bringing back some old school rock 'n' roll with their new 10-track LP, II, which is available on Bandcamp. The vintage power pop sounds on this album are delivered with a bit of a punk spirit--much in the same way a band like the Undertones did back in the day. However, Nude Beach is what's worth focusing on, not their influences. This is mostly due to their energy in a lot of these songs, fronted by vocalist Chuck Betz who has a really great, raw delivery.

Elvis Depressedly- “Waves of Bad Intention”

Stream: Elvis Depressedly- "Waves of Bad Intention" Mat Cothran--a singer-songwriter known mostly for his work under the name Coma Cinema--has recently been pushing a side project of his, Depressedly. Under the Depressedly name, Mat has released a new track.

This project's past releases are very similar to Coma Cinema, and usually just a bit more experimental with vocal distortion. “Waves of Bad Intention” is different from of all of these previous releases; it was recorded professionally in a studio. This may worry some since the raw sound is part of the appeal of Cothrans past work. However, the honest, depressed emotions are not lost in this new hi-fi quality.

The clarity improves along with the depth and texture of the Depressedly's sound. Nothing is blown out or drowning out the vocals like in the past, instead the guitars and drums just help put further emphasis on the lyrics.

There is more info to come in the future from these studio recordings. Until then Cutters Only, The Ontological Anarchy of Elvis Depressedly a re-mastered collection of the projects Bandcamp releases is available on itunes now.
