Toro Y Moi- "How I Know"

Videoschriscap1 Comment

In the new video for Toro y Moi's Underneath The Pine cut "How I Know," three friends explore a haunted house late at night. Over the course of the next three minutes, they all die spectacular deaths. One suffocates on bubble gum, one gets electrocuted by spaghetti, and one of the guys actually ends up getting decapitated by a loose DVD. By the end, they're all ghosts, and a ghostly dance party ensues. A chillwaver's play on the witch house phenomenon, perhaps?

Underneath The Pine is out now on Carpark Records. Buy it at Insound Vinyl here.

Toro Y Moi's latest LP is a noticeable improvement compared to the sketchbook of ideas that made up his last album, Causers of this. Underneath the Pine is loaded with light, pretty arrangements and dancey disco beats. The songwriting and vocals aren't always standout, though. While the whole album may not feel standout, it's a nice and easygoing experience, for sure. Great for soundtracking a small get together or an all-night sexcapade.

Since the debut of Causers of This, Toro Y Moi’s music has evolved a lot. His sophomore release, Underneath the Pine, leaves behind the summer of Chillwave and promises to be a true departure from his past efforts. This is clearly demonstrated in the vocal loop driven “New Beat.” Here we have a refined approach that's more reflective of Bundick’s true style and talent. Reminiscent of the disco era, Bundick manages to transcend space and time with a cool ARP vibe that is undeniably groovy. The result, Brundick is expressing himself with utmost confidence and asking us to find out what is Underneath the Pine. -

Can we put the term "chillwave" to bed yet? I hope so! Especially since this new Toro Y Moi track is a left hook to all who thought the project's sole member, Chaz Bundick, would stay confined within the limitations of fuzzy, electronic bedroom beats. "New Beat" starts a party and brings a lot of maturity to the dancefloor. Looking forward to this new album more and more now!

Look for Underneath the Pine on 2/22 via Carpark.

Toro Y Moi- "Still Sound" ‡ MP3

As many of y'all may remember, I wasn't the biggest fan of Toro Y Moi's debut album, which dropped earlier this year. At the end of the day, I feel Causers had more possibilities than actualities.

Toro is gearing up for another album release in February, and it's titled Underneath the Pine. He's still doing it through Carpark, and has got a much more fleshed out sound on this first track to drop from the album.

"Still Sound" has a great retro beat that sounds like it's straight out of the 70s. Toro seems to have worked harder on getting his vocals on key, and he's not using as much reverb to distort himself in the mix. It's a nice change of pace. The chorus is upbeat, and I love the jazzy synth chords that bubble in the background. Dig on it:
