Viet Cong - "Continental Shelf" (NSFW Video)

These guys are almost here, I promise. The anticipation for their debut album brings to light one simple truth: Viet Cong know how to build hype the right way. A strong EP, quite a few scorching singles, and most importantly, quality music have the collective music world drooling for their album. "Continental Shelf" was released in October, but its video was released yesterday. The video features haunting macabre imagery with the occasional cut to chill-wave inspired footage of the ocean. Like the song itself, the video is quite jarring. When describing the song to a friend, I related it to him by simply saying "Imagine if Surfer Blood were really, really angry and a little scary." That seemed to do the trick. The west coast stomp is there, as well as the monolithic guitar riffs lumbering a long like most surf-rock does these days. However, the sunny reverberation on the electric guitar has been swapped with an dark lo-fi hiss, and lead vocalist Matt Flegel could teach a university class on mastering the post-punk howl. It all ads up to a bizarre yet ultimately catchy experience definitely worth a view and a listen.

There's nothing that kills an idea faster than a mindlessly copied trend. I think the idea of "lo-fi bands" qualify.

Still, despite the grimy, rough recordings being spoiled for me a bit, I find this latest album from the Uptights kind of alluring. It doesn't just sound like a band with a crummy recording. Rather, it sounds like these guys have an appreciation for noise, soundscapes, and drones--as well as rock and pop, of course.

A lot of the songs are short of breath, but they last long enough to remind me of albums in a similar vain. Women's self-titled debut is definitely one that comes to mind.

Download the entire album in full via the band's Bandcamp. This album, titled At the Wörthersee Hotel, will also be getting a cassette release via keepsecretrecords in the beginning of October.

Women- "Eyesore" ‡ MP3

We already blogged a stream of this track, so why not blog the MP3 not that's it's officially out?

As I'm sure you've heard, Canada's Women have a new LP slated for Sept. via Jagjag. For those of you who might not have heard the leak--and I'm not saying I have--but I heard from a friend who knows a friend that you shouldn't be tricked by this new track's sweet siren song. It's pretty and tame, but Women have not given up their experimental ways on their upcoming LP, Public Strain. Whether that's a good or a bad thing is up to you. For me, it's a win. Grab "Eyesore" down below:

In 2008, the Canadian band Women made a varied, lo-fi debut that exhibited a lot of talent and taste. The Chad VanGaalen-produced album certainly turned my head, for sure.

Women have a new album slated for Sept. titled Public Strain. Below for a stream of the album's closer, "Eyesore," and its tracklisting:
