Gorillaz went to Madison Square Garden last night to perform what might be the largest show of the year. They are currently on tour for their epic multi genre album The Mountain and last night felt like reaching the summit of the mountain.

The openers Deltron 3030 and Little Simz kicked off the fun with incredible opening sets. Deltron 3030, which consists of Del The Funky Homosapien, Dan the Automater and DJ Kid Koala went first and nailed their set. My favorite song by them "Positive Contact" reminded me of the early 2000's Adult Swim bumpers. Hypnotic, spacey and just plain fun.

When Little Simz came on stage, the arena was electric. She is an artist I have been trying to see for a half decade and I felt blessed when she graced the stage. Hearing a song like "Free" performed live reminded me of Simz's lyrical prowess. Each song from her a story and last night was a movie.

Gorillaz opened their set with the title track of their latest album The Mountain which had me in awe. Damon Albarn's vocals were on point and so convincing that his animated counterpart 2-D felt real. Hearing the sitar from "The Mountain" made me feel like I was going on an epic journey. The crowd and I were being sent to a different universe, one that felt bigger than our own.

It wouldn't be a Gorillaz show if special guests didn't appear throughout the show. One guest that made the night was Pusha T. He joined the band for the song "Let Me Out" along with the Harlem Gospel Choir. Hearing this live reminded me why I fell in love with Gorillaz. The genre blending sound and creative musical arrangements had me dancing out of my seat.

My favorite part of the show came towards the end when Gorillaz performed their generational hit "Feel Good Inc." Hearing it live teleported me to 2005, when I heard it for the first time. The rapping from Posdnuos was sharp and seeing him alongside Albarn was watching a masterpiece come to life. Adding to this mesmerizing experience were the red lights that were used during the song. I felt like I was attending a party.

The visuals for the night were impressive. I almost believed I was watching the best Saturday morning cartoon. Outside of the colorful background, the band's set up was massive. Every type of instrument you could think of was on stage. Shoutout to Albarn's outfit, the red beanie and light jeans complemented the green jacket. One more thing, the futuristic curved stage that was showing both the band and the visuals needs to be at more concerts.

What impressed me the most about the entire concert was the vast assembly of songs Albarn and co. were able to perform to the crowd, touching on most of their major releases. What's even crazier is that every song felt like I was hearing it for the first time (even though I listened to each song at 10 times each). That fresh feeling felt the most apparent with "On Melancholy Hill." Not only is it my favorite Gorillaz song, but hearing it live made me want to revisit Plastic Beach.

If you think I was there just for the hits, you are mistaken because Gorillaz had plenty of deep cuts for everyone. "19-2000" was a banger I wasn't expecting to hear last night, but catching it live had me baffled as to why this song isn't bigger. And speaking of hidden gems, "Casablanca" off of The Mountain put the crowd and me into a trance.

Going to Madison Square Garden to see a show is an experience everyone should do at least once in their life. Almost every iconic act of the past 5 decades has performed at MSG at least once in their career, and Gorillaz are a part of that legacy.

For a band that has been around for literally my entire life, they gave a performance that rivaled most I have seen this year. Seeing a whimsical, impressive show was just what I needed last night, and Gorillaz delivered it like priority mail.
