It's been 32 years since Oregon's feminist punk legends Heavens to Betsy last went out on the road, but, off the back of a fairly secret reunion show last night in Portland, they're all set to do it again. A ten-date tour has just been announced, kicking off in San Francisco on October 17. Tickets for the reunion tour go on sale next Thursday (July 2) at 10am local time.
Having formed in 1991, singer/guitarist Corin Tucker and drummer/bassist Tracy Sawyer called time on the band shortly after releasing their debut album, the now-classic Calculated, in March 1994, with Tucker forming Sleater-Kinney with Carrie Brownstein later that same year. Sawyer, meanwhile, went on to form the bands Flying Tigers and The Lies, and more recently has played with garage-punk trio The Husbands.
In a joint interview with Bandcamp back in 2018 to mark the reissue of their 1993 EP These Monsters Are Real, Tucker and Sawyer blamed the Heavens to Betsy split on the pressures of being a struggling duo in their late teens. "I'm so proud of us for doing it," said Tucker, looking back on their passionate, social justice-charged songs. "If I have achieved anything with my musical career, if I've added my voice to people trying to make things better for women, then that's a huge accomplishment."
