Former "American Idol" contestant Caleb Flynn, a former Ohio music pastor, was convicted of murder Tuesday in the shooting death of his wife while she slept.

Ohio prosecutors said Caleb Flynn staged a home invasion in February after killing his wife, Ashley Flynn, a 37-year-old teacher and volleyball coach, while he was having an affair with another woman.

Caleb Flynn, now a convicted murderer, could face life in prison without the possibility of parole. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for Monday.

According to the Associated Press:

"(Caleb) Flynn closed his eyes, shook his head to the side and fought to maintain his composure as the judge read the guilty verdicts on charges of murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence. He began sobbing while the judge dismissed the jury."

Flynn's attorney called the verdicts "disappointing" and is expected to file an appeal on his client's behalf.

Thirteen years ago, Caleb Flynn appeared on "American Idol" with judges Mariah Carey, Randy Jackson, and Nicki Minaj, telling viewers that his wife encouraged him to pursue his dreams on the show.

Jurors heard during closing arguments that Caleb Flynn wanted out of his marriage when he shot and killed his wife at their suburban home in Tipp City, Ohio. After killing his wife, he called 911 and remained at home with his two daughters until police arrived.

The night before the shooting, Miami County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney  Matthew Joseph said he texted his mistress: "I choose you. I'm free. Actions will come tomorrow."
