After only releasing a batch of one-off singles and going on a semi-musical hiatus since 2020, Grimes returns today with a new single, "ACCELERANDO," as well as the announcement of her new album Psyopera. The experimental electronic pop artist is also going back to releasing through her own label Nazgul, following a brief yet unfruitful (just "Player of Games" and "Shinigami Eyes") partnership with Columbia Records. With no release date announced yet, Psyopera will be Grimes' first full record since 2020's Miss Anthropocene.
Listen to "ACCELERANDO" (feat. VADAKIN) below:
"ACCELERANDO" reunites Grimes with VADAKIN, who helped write and produce the artist's 2025 single, "Artificial Angels."
The new single meshes two of Grimes' developing interests over the years: resonant, hard-hitting, sweaty EDM beats that started to take over her discography since Miss Anthropocene and lyrics that play with the idea of AI, new technology, and its social impact on human relationships. Per a press release, "Psy Opera will cover everything Grimes witnessed as a woman of history during her hiatus from pop music."
Grimes began teasing Psyopera earlier this week, posting an album trailer and inviting followers to join the Instagram community, 'Eve is Online.' Parodying the creation story that begins the Gospel of John, she says:
"In the beginning was the Word and the Word was God. And man made God in his image, and God embraced man’s nature...And Eden was forged in metal and artificial light rivaled the sun."
Images of weapons, missiles, destruction, and fires flash on screen, spliced in between a cyborg-ified version of Grimes. More commentary on AI ensues, with the brand new sentence, "On the first day, God created the large language model."

More on Psyopera will soon be announced.
