Jay Weinberg makes vocal debut on new Softcult collaboration

Jay Weinberg is keeping busy in his post-Slipknot era. His latest release, "Drown Fountain", finds him stepping even further outside his comfort zone, teaming up with Canadian grunge-gaze duo Softcult for one of the most unexpected collabs of his career.

The new single is available now and serves as the latest installment in Weinberg's ongoing collaborative series. Rather than leaning on the thunderous drumming that earned him three Modern Drummer "Metal Drummer of the Year" honors, "Drown Fountain" embraces hazy shoegaze textures, drones, and atmospheric soundscapes. It also marks Weinberg's first-ever recorded vocal performance, with Softcult's Mercedes Arn-Horn adding her signature vocals to what may be his most personal song to date.

"'Drown Fountain' is this weird song I started writing back in 2013 that I'd keep revisiting over the years, but I could never figure out how to get it across the finish line, it took my introduction to Softcult's music and reaching out to see if they'd be interested in collaborating for the song to finally become what it was meant to be. It's an honor to work with them on this song, especially in that it feels more vulnerable than anything I've created in the past. I've never sang before, I've always had my loud drums to 'protect me' in a way…it's all new and exciting territory, and to have Mercedes and Phoenix help me bring it to life in this beautiful way has been an artistic dream."

"Drown Fountain" follows Weinberg's previously released collaborative tracks "Sandstone", featuring George Clarke of Deafheaven, and "Drone Operator", featuring NOWHERE2RUN, which includes members of Code Orange. Each release has showcased a different side of Weinberg's songwriting while continuing to expand his musical range beyond heavy music.

The visual identity of the project has also become a major creative focus. Weinberg enlisted acclaimed artist Paul Romano, known for his work with Mastodon, Trivium, and The Red Chord, to create artwork for each single, with every collaboration tied to a different color of the rainbow.

"I've been an avid fan of Paul's work ever since I was in an Ozzfest mosh pit seeing this insane painting of Moby Dick (Romano's cover for Mastodon's 'Leviathan') raised up as a stage banner. Ever since then, I've been enamored with the worlds that he creates for the artists he works with. We've become friends over the years, and as I've been creating these songs, I pitched the idea to him about designating one color of the rainbow to each individual collaboration. He's taken that idea, the lyrics and stories behind these songs, and created something I never could have done, on my own. That's pretty much the spirit of this project anyway; not really starting a full-on new band with different groups of friends, where we all have busy creative lives and responsibilities filling our schedules…but rather a low-pressure, single-song way to make something that's eclectic and exciting, that creates a larger, dynamic picture altogether. I'm so stoked to see where it goes from here."

Weinberg's creative momentum doesn't stop there. He also handles drumming duties on Fuming Mouth's upcoming album, "The Ringing Bell", due out July 17 through Triple B Records. Produced by Kurt Ballou, the record marks Weinberg's first collaboration with the Massachusetts death metal and hardcore band and follows the release of the singles "A Blaze Of Nihilism" and "Cheat Death".
