Yesterday, it was confirmed that the music publications Brooklyn Vegan, Alternative Press, Revolver, and Goldmine were hit with mass layoffs at the discretion of their parent company Veeps, an arm of the live entertainment giant Live Nation. Veeps, who are mostly in the business of e-commerce (which is why BV in particular has pushed exclusive vinyl variants in recent years) was founded by twin brothers Benji and Joel Madden of the pop punk band Good Charlotte.
There is no official word from Veeps or any of the individual outlets on their future viability, and these layoffs may spell the end of all four publications.
Instead of working to address the elimination of dozen of professionals livelihoods, Joel Madden joined Hilary Duff on stage at Madison Square Garden to perform Good Charlotte hit "The Anthem" in what seems to be a ploy to bury the reports that name him responsible for these layoffs.
Madden and Duff dated in the early 2000's just as Duff was concluding her role as the titular character of hallmark Disney Channel show Lizzy McGuire. When they began dating, she was 16 and he was 25. All of the coverage of this performance skirts around that detail, instead playing up the nostalgia of the two titans of early 00's pop culture.
