Lorde openly criticizes Spotify for their 'inaccurate' AI feature

On Thursday, July 16th, Lorde posted on her Instagram story about an 'inaccurate' Spotify feature on one of her songs, "Current Affairs," off her latest album, Virgin.

The singer openly criticized Spotify's newest "About the song" beta addition to the platform, which utilizes AI-generated song descriptions, often yielding misleading summaries and interpretations of the artist's vision.

Spotify's generated summary reads:

“On her Ultrasound World Tour, Lorde turns Current Affairs into a full-on performance piece, stripping down to underwear while a dancer pours water over her stomach so the song plays out like the shower scene she talks about on stage.”

In reality, Lorde used this choreographed sequence during the track "GRWM" on her recent Ultrasound tour. She quickly took to her stories to call out and slam Spotify's AI-fueled malpractice.

"Hey @spotify i'm gonna go out on a limb n say we don't want this. Not only is this inaccurate (not the song i did that in) but reducing a song to an ai generated meaning right at the source feels like it limits free interpretation imo. At least make it possible for artists to opt out please."

Recently, a representative from Spotify reached out for further comment about the artist's open criticism, explaining that the source info "comes from articles across the internet," and when something reads inaccurately, "Getting it right matters to us."

Spotify has yet to tweak the description on that song and has since not elaborated on how it will fix the "About the song" feature in its beta stage.
