Between 1964 and 1967, David Bowie was a young, British nobody with large aspirations and a determined work ethic. At 15, he had formed his first band, the Konrads; at 17, he released his first single, "Liza Jane"; and at 20, he changed his name from Davie Jones to David Bowie and released his self-titled debut album, David Bowie.

In this period of musical self-discovery, Bowie went through several bands including Davie Jones & the King Bees, with whom he released "Liza Jane," The Manish Boys, and Davie Jones and the Lower Third. While a part of these groups and touring the London club-circuit, Bowie met Shel Talmy, the producer behind early hits by The Who and The Kinks, who signed Bowie and the Manish Boys in 1964. At this point, Bowie was moving on to The Lower Third, and he and the band recorded a series of early singles with Talmy including "I Pity the Fool" and "You've Got a Habit of Leaving," both of which were commercial failures.

Many of the songs recorded during this period were released in a 1991 collection titled, Early On (1964-1966), and released by Rhino records. Now in 2026, Parlophone records have announced a remastered collection of Bowie's singles recorded with Talmy in 1965, titled The Shel Talmy Recordings.

The collection boasts remastered renditions of the singles released in Early On, as well as ten previously unreleased tracks unearthed from Talmy's collection. These recordings notably feature Jimmy Page, then a session guitarist who would later join the Yardbirds and found the legendary rock band Led Zeppelin.

The Shel Talmy Recordings is set to be released on September 18, 2026 on CD, digital, and vinyl. The tracks were remastered in 2026 by John Webber. To promote the record, on July 15 Parlophone released the remastered single, "I Want Your Love," recorded with The Lower Third.
