California-born Austrian-Iranian artist Sofie Royer has shared her first new music of the year in the form of "Cowboy Mouth", a song inspired by the Patti Smith and Sam Shepard 1971 play of the same name, as well as the ethos of punk and maverick filmmakers like David Cronenberg and David Lynch.
Written last year in downtime between tours, the song was brought to life with the help of friends from NYC group Rebounder. Watch the self-directed and edited video below:
Writing in a press release, Royer says that the video was inspired by an abandoned box of shoes found on the street by filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, who then shared a photo of the box online. "There was something so decidedly moving yet egregious about all the different pairs,” she says. “I was left wondering who they'd belonged to, who had walked in them; that it prompted my own little silly fantasy of what would play out if I'd tried on a pair, discarded my own and just kept walking."
There's more to come from Royer later this year. Her most recent album, Young-Girl Forever, was released in November 2024.
