Young Fathers - "Effigy"

Scottish experimental hip hop trio Young Fathers brings the second installment of Friends of Friends' Show Me the Future compilation series to a powerful close with the track "Effigy." With its alternately bleeping and rumbling instrumental and its formidable flow, it's hard to blame the label for gushing that it's "a track so good we HAD to preview it."

Shlohmo - "Don't Say No" ft. How To Dress Well

Shlohmo drops yet another track from his forthcoming Laid Out EP, which is dropping in March. This particular cut features vocal contributions from alternative R&B pioneer How To Dress Well.

It's a really spacey, detailed track. Not only is there some trap influence coming from the hi-hats, but there's some particularly emotive vocal work toward the end of the track. Who knew these guys could work so well together?

Rarebit- "Mt. Weather" (Premiere)

A video from the forthcoming Rarebit album, Daizo. It's been released this week on Non Projects.

Rarebit is the pseudonym of electronic music producer and composer Justin Hopkins, and his latest release has a concept that can't be caught by listening to a single song. The album is an exploration of familial genetics via music, taking inspiration from his own relatives to create a set of tracks that are different, but resemble one another in certain ways. Some tracks blatantly sample others on the album.

With the track above, "Mt. Weather," Justin combines ambient waves of synthetic tones with some subtle drums. The live recording of this percussion really brings the music alive, and allows the track to get more and more intense as it continues. It reaches a quick and quiet climax just before five minutes and thirty seconds, leaving me with the question of where this album will go next.

Shlohmo's Bad Vibes is a nice set of thirteen beats that will chill out just about any situation. The music here functions on different levels of listening. They're great as ambient backdrops, but can be explored actively as well. WATCH THE REVIEW
