REKS- "Devils Clutches"

New TracksalleyborgComment

Hailing from Lawrence, Massachusetts, underground rapper REKS made a bit of a splash last year with his album, Rhymatic Eternal King Supreme. Pairing Reks' seasoned flow with the album's boom bap and piano-reliant production won the emcee a lot of fans and on "Devils Clutches," the first track to leak from his upcoming album, Eyes Watching God, Reks sticks to that formula. The piano melody at the beat's core is short but evocative and the scratching Hazardis Soundz contributes to the track adds a nice degree of contrast. Meanwhile, Reks' flow is as solid as ever, engaging the listener and resolutely riding the beat.

Eyes Watching God (with Reks rapping and Hazardis Soundz on production duties) is currently slated for release early next year.

Reks- "Bang Bang" ft. J NiCS

Massachusetts MC Reks drops a new music video from the second album he's released this year, REBELutionary, which you can grab a copy of here or here.

If the intro to this video didn't make the subject matter of this song obvious enough, Reks and NiCS trade one verse after another pointing out a lot of the pointless, greedy motivations behind ghetto homicides. The beat produced by Numonics is pretty awesome, too. Really soulful vocal sample matched up with some watery guitars and a chunky boom bap beat. I like it.

Reks & Statik Selektah- "Sins" ft. Alias

Accompanied by a weird video, "Sins" is a straightforward hip-hop song, based around a hook listing the seven deadly sins. The beat is the best part of this song, but none of the emcees step up to this track. This is a shame, cause I know that they are capable of better verses (on tracks like "Say Goodnight"). The hook is a too bland for me, I can get behind an anti-chorus, but this one breaks up the song too much for me. That all said, this could easily slot into your hip hop playlist or played at the next party you may or may not attend.

Reks- "Such A Showoff"

Reks fresh off releasing last year's album Rhythmatic Eternal King Supreme is set to drop another LP this year. Like R.E.K.S., it features plenty of production from Statik Selektah. A track from this forthcoming LP has just been released with a lot of lyrical talent being showed off over the Selektah beat. The production reminds me of something off of Illmatic , pushing lots of heavy on the keys and bass, with a scratched vocal cuts over the hook. Pretty sure it's a Kanye vocal, too.

That old school, braggadocious vibe runs throughout this track delivering potent rhymes and a crisp rhythms. Straight, No Chaser  is set to release April 24.

Reks- "Autographs" (prod. Statik Selektah)

A new collaborative track from producer Statik Selektah, and a rapper who dropped one of my favorite 2011 hip hop releases, Reks. After the job these guys did together on R.E.K.S., I can't wait to hear what they've got cooking on this forthcoming release, Straight, No Chaser.

"Autographs" starts things off on a positive note, painting the long, winding road Reks has walked during his years in the rap game. Seems like everything is on the up and up, too.
