Vans executive apologizes for Fugazi collab confusion

When Vans announced their latest collaboration with Fugazi, it made one set of fans very excited and left another quite confused.

Why would the prototypical post-hardcore band that famously shunned selling their own t-shirts collaborate with any brand, even one as music-centric as Vans, for a drop seemingly antithetical with their long-standing ethos, especially when they haven't played a show in over 20 years?

Well, as it turns out, they didn't. No, the Fugazi Vans is working with is a clothing brand founded in 2020, which Steve Van Doren, the V.P. of Marketing and Events of his family's company, made clear on social media.

"Sorry for any confusion this Past week. Fugazi the Band and Fugazi the clothing Brand are not connected. I have deep respect for Ian MacKaye, his impact on music and his connection to Skateboarding . We spoke this morning and are looking at ways to support longtime skateboarders and giving back to the communities we both care deeply about."

Now, to MacKaye's credit, he was a good sport about things, with the official Dischord Records account commenting on the situation under the announcement post, noting that someone at Vans will certainly reach out about the move. Fortunately, with Fugazi having just released a demo of recording with the late, great Steve Albini to help raise money for the Letters Charity, Vans snafu should put some eyes back on the legendary band as they look to raise money for a good cause.
